Multi-side brushing in one pass

An efficient multi-side brushing machine processes the workpiece on all sides in a single pass, ensuring consistent Shou Sugi Ban brushing results.

Controlled charred wood finishing

Tynex brushes enable precise charred wood brushing, removing the carbonized layer while preserving the desired textured wood surface.

Flexible automated brushing system

Adjustable settings and angled side brushes allow this automated brushing system to handle different sizes, shapes and radii with ease

From charring to control

Shou Sugi Ban is all about contrast. Between fire and wood. Between protection and appearance.

For a customer applying this traditional Japanese technique, the challenge was in the step after burning. The wood is charred on all four sides, creating a carbonized layer that protects it from external influences.

At the same time, this layer defines the visual result. In Shou Sugi Ban brushing, the key question is whether to leave the surface intact or brush it back to reveal the natural wood structure and create a textured wood surface.

In this case, the customer chose charred wood brushing as part of the finishing process. By carefully brushing the wood, the softer parts are removed while the harder grain remains visible. This results in a strong, characteristic texture while maintaining the protective benefits of the carbonized wood.

Because the wood is treated on all sides, the solution required a multi-side brushing machine that can process the workpiece from all directions in a single pass, including top, bottom and both sides.

Flexibility was essential. The customer works with different sizes and shapes, including parts with radii. Parameters such as speed, pressure and rotation direction needed to be easily adjustable and storable within the automated brushing system.

Dust extraction was another key requirement, as carbonized wood processing generates a large amount of residue.

The solution is an industrial wood brushing machine designed for Shou Sugi Ban surface finishing, where the workpiece is processed on all sides in a single pass.

Testing showed that Tynex brushes provide the best results for charred wood finishing. They are strong enough to remove the carbonized layer, while maintaining full control over the final appearance and surface structure.

To ensure maximum flexibility, the side brushes are adjustable at an angle, allowing the system to handle different shapes and radii. Key parameters such as speed, pressure and rotation direction can be easily adjusted and stored.

The machine is equipped with an advanced dust extraction system for wood processing and an air knife at the end of the line to clean the workpiece before the next step. The customer was also advised on the required extraction capacity.

Finally, the solution was adapted to fit within the available space of the existing production line. Despite its modular design, this industrial finishing solution is fully tailored to the customer’s situation.
