Dual-sided cleaning

Cleans both the top and bottom of the scaffold planks simultaneously in a single pass.

600 mm working width

Allows processing of two to three planks at the same time for maximum volume and capacity.

Tynex 120 brushes

Effectively removes tough cement residues and dirt without damaging or structuring the wood.

Efficient cleaning of scaffold planks for reuse

Universal is a leading Dutch company specializing in renting out wooden scaffold planks to the construction and infrastructure sectors.

The planks return from construction sites after being exposed to weather, dirt, and cement residues. The cement haze on the surface in particular makes thorough cleaning difficult. While the planks remain technically suitable for reuse, the existing cleaning process was a major bottleneck.

The work was done entirely manually, starting with scraping off cement residues and followed by sanding. Given the length of the planks and the high volumes involved, this traditional method was highly labor-intensive, time-consuming, and inefficient.

Together with Universal, we designed a mechanical cleaning solution aimed purely at efficient surface cleaning without structuring or damaging the wood. After extensive testing, a specialized Tynex 120 brush with a short filament was selected to effectively strip dirt and cement residues while leaving the wood surface intact.

The custom machine configuration features top and bottom brushes, allowing both sides of the scaffold plank to be cleaned simultaneously in a single pass. With a generous working width of 600 mm, the system can process two to three planks at the same time. This significantly increases throughput capacity and allows the line speed to be adjusted dynamically for heavily contaminated materials to optimize the cleaning effect.

The transition from a heavy manual process to automated mechanical cleaning delivered a clear impact:

  • Reduced labor costs: Eliminates the need for manual scraping and sanding.

  • Higher throughput: Faster processing of large volumes with dual-sided, multi-plank feeding.

  • Consistency and simplicity: Operators no longer need to manually rotate or reposition planks, ensuring uniform quality.

  • Sustainable reuse: Efficiently reclaims valuable materials that might otherwise be discarded.
