The process

Two and a half years ago, our customer started operating a finishing line based on oxidative oil. The line included an infeed system, brushing machine, cleaning stations, and a polishing unit. While this setup resulted in high-quality wood flooring, it came with a major drawback: the boards needed at least 24 hours of drying time in racks.

With a desire to scale up and streamline production, Unique strategically invested in an upgrade towards UV oil. The goal: perform all processing steps – brushing, coloring, oiling, and drying – in one continuous flow, without manual handling or delays.

The original finishing line faced three key challenges:

  • The need for drying racks slowed down production and consumed valuable space.

  • Oxidative oil offered limited speed and control.

  • Scaling up to higher production volumes would cause logistical bottlenecks and increased costs.

The customer needed a smarter, more efficient solution that would preserve existing investments while unlocking new performance potential. At the same time, the visual finish of oxidative oil had to be maintained, even with the transition to UV technology.

The solution was a smart redesign and expansion of the existing production line:

  • Reuse of existing components such as the infeed system and cleaning station.
  • New five-head brushing machine to allow various wood textures.
  • Double coater for water-based stain and polishing brushes for even color distribution.
  • 10-meter-long dryer using infrared and airflow to rapidly dry the stain.
  • UV oil application with multiple polishing stations, reverse rollers, a gelling step, a topcoat, and full UV curing.

Each step is fully automated. Boards are processed efficiently via cross transport and arrive at the end of the line fully finished, board by board.
